You’ve heard of people eating insects before, either out in the wild or on a dare. But did you know that YOU eat between one and two pounds of bugs a year without realizing it?
Some bugs are consumed by accident, like in your sleep or with a random gnat landing in your soda (before you notice and take a big swig). Most of the bugs and bug parts (ewww!), though, are found in processed and packaged foods you DO eat on purpose.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has unique guidelines on how many insect parts can be allowed in each food that gets put on grocery shelves. For example, an eight-ounce glass of juice is allowed to have up to five fruit flies, and up to 100 grams of bug parts are allowed in a bag of frozen vegetables. Your healthy wheat-flour cookie might have several grams of roach legs in it, and your glass of beer might contain thousands of maggot bits!
Inspectors do random checks at packaging facilities and make sure the samples are within acceptable limits. It may sound disgusting, but these bug chunks won’t cause you any harm. In fact, your next diet could be a big success if you just remember this fact every time you reach for the snacks.
