LaMarcus Thompson was very concerned. He worried that people who visited sinful places like saloons and brothels were going to spend an eternity in Hell, and he knew he had to do something to save them.
In 1881, Thompson had an idea. He would design a pure, clean, wholesome thrill ride based on the switchback railroad. Even better, he would build this new ride in the most sinful place he knew: Coney Island. Thompson was going to wipe out all the debauchery he saw, no matter what!
And we’re sure glad he tried, because we got the roller coaster out of it!
