Have you ever heard the expression ‘the greatest thing since sliced bread’? Well, once upon a time in America, the government decided that sliced bread wasn’t so great after all. What’s more, they got the law to back them up. In one of the strangest laws ever made, the United States banned the sale of ready-sliced bread in 1943. They were prepared to enforce it. Why? It seems that they wanted to conserve bread because of the war, and sliced bread dried out too fast. After complaints from busy housewives and bakeries, the government thankfully gave us back our easy sandwiches.
