After seven seasons, the CBS series Elementary has ended. It featured Johnny Lee Miller as a present-day version of the famous detective. Which brings us to one of life’s curiosities. Sherlock Holmes is often associated with the phrase ‘Elementary My Dear Watson’ as he explains yet another unlikely case solution to his faithful sidekick.
And yet, nowhere in the sixty tales penned by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is this phrase actually said. Yet it has been used on stage, in films, even in newspaper articles of the time, and by authors including PG Wodehouse. It’s one of many such iconic phrases which were never actually said by those most linked to them! Perhaps a well-known detective should investigate such mysteries!
